Bangkok – In response to growing public concern about fuel prices, Chevrolet offers new car buyers either Bt40,000 worth of free gas or rock bottom interest rates on selected models throughout July.

With the sky-high price of oil impacting everybody, Chevrolet offers a pocket-friendly package of incentives for motorists purchasing selected Chevrolet models before July 31st, 2008. Chevy customers nationwide who place a 25 percent down payment on any one of the models featured in this month’s promotional campaign can choose between low interest rates of only 0.49 percent over 48 months or Bt40,000 worth of free gasoline.

“The astronomical price of oil is the number one consideration for anyone buying a car these days. Realizing this, we have rolled out this special July promotion to help Chevy owners where they are being hit hardest: in their wallets. This unique promotion means the average motorist will not have to pay for gas for at least six months. I am confident the quality of our vehicles and these attractive incentives are a winning combination for our clients,” said John Thomson, Vice President for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales of Chevrolet Sales (Thailand).

These promotional privileges are available to customers who place a 25 percent down payment on Chevrolet Colorado (except CNG model), Chevrolet Optra (except bi-fuel CNG system model) or Chevrolet AVEO.

As a driver, you probably don't give much thought to where, when or by whom the components that make up your vehicle were produced. Today, it‘s simply a case of turning the key in the ignition and off you go. 100 years ago, however, when automobiles were in their infancy, things weren’t quite so convenient; cars were started by hand-cranking the engine into life using a starting handle inserted through the vehicle’s radiator grill. Fortunately, in 1911, General Motors Corporation (GM) changed the (often sweaty) face of motoring forever with the invention of what was at the time a revolutionary leap forward for motoring: the electric starter. Not only did it save the energy needed to crank the engine into action, it also allowed drivers to control the temperature inside their vehicles – all with one switch.

While road accidents, deaths and injuries are always a concern for automotive manufacturers, if it wasn‘t for GM’s introduction of reinforced metal roofs and shatter-proof safety glass in windscreens 89 years ago, the accident statistics would undoubtedly be even more alarming.

These are just two of the countless automobile innovations GM has introduced over the years to make driving a safe, comfortable, more enjoyable experience for motorists across the globe. Other features the company has fitted as standard to all its vehicles – things that most of us now take for granted – have included disk brakes, power steering and seat belts.

100 years of creativity has made GM the world’s leading automotive company in terms of sales, innovation and technology development and implementation. The company has consistently quashed motoring records, rewriting the history of the automobile along the way.

Since its formation in September 1908, GM has produced almost 10 billion cars. Bumper-to-bumper these vehicles would stretch for over 4.5 million kilometers: the equivilent of 117 times around the globe. One could say that GM spans the planet in the blink of an eye.

Today, GM cars and trucks are sold worldwide under 12 brands, the most familiar for Thai drivers being Chevrolet, Opel, Holden, Saab and Cadillac. The company also operates 11 design centers across the globe to ensure it meets the demands of drivers from all corners of the world. Worldwide, GM employs 284,000 employees: more than the population of some small countries.

As the biggest automotive manufacturer in the world, GM is far from complacent; it continually strives to be more innovative, as illustrated by the constant engineering improvements it has made to the more than 800 concept vehicles it has developed to date. The 200 most distinguished of these concept cars are now on permanent display at the GM Heritage Center in Detroit, USA, to serve as a reminder of the company’s history and to inspire the next generation of vehicle designers.

With GM design engineers located around the globe, research and development is a 24/7 operation. But no GM team works in isolation; connected via multimedia conferencing facilities, GM designers at the company’s 11 international design centers use the latest technology – including 3D Virtual Reality Design – to review blueprints, improve and reconfigure engines and remodel exteriors and interiors before the latest concept cars are unveiled at international motor shows.

It is only after market feedback and exhaustive testing – often in excess of 5 million kilometers per prototype – that the company will know whether a concept car is suitable for commercial production. While the new technology has made research and development more convenient, attention to detail is a part of GM’s 100 year legacy.

With the global fuel crisis hitting all nations, GM continues to seek solutions that not only reflect the company’s commitment to its customers but also its responsibility to the environment. GM’s “Energy Solution Provider” concept is pro-actively developing technology to both reduce fuel consumption and lower vehicle emissions.

With a tremendous investment in both financial and human terms, GM has developed a wide range of energy-saving solutions as it strives towards the ultimate “Gas-Free” vehicle. Current initiatives include ethanol-based bio-fuels, with the company developing an E100 vehicle that runs on 100% ethanol; a Bio Hybrid vehicle, introduced at the beginning of 2008, which mixes bio-fuel and electricity; the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in electric car; and the Chevrolet Tahoe Boss, a self-drive, computer controlled vehicle that eliminates driver error.

Last but not least, the imminent arrival of mass-produced Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology – allowing the manufacture of hydrogen-powered vehicles that emit no harmful exhaust fumes – will revolutionize the global automotive industry. GM is currently testing a fleet of Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell SUVs in cities across the States and major cities around the globe. When these tests are conclusive GM will become the first automotive company to introduce tomorrow’s technology into today’s lifestyle.

After 100 years in business, many companies would be happy to rest on their laurels: not General Motors. Even before the centennial celebrations get underway GM is already planning for the next 100 years. While the company acknowledges that it is the events of the past century that have placed it in pole position in the global auotmotive industry, its vision is firmly focused on the technologies of the future. This forward-thinking corporate philosophy is reflected in the company’s new “GMnext“ branding initiative.

Bangkok — As General Motors prepares to celebrate its landmark 100th anniversary, the world’s leading automobile manufacturer is refusing to go retro, rather focusing all of its efforts firmly on the future.

As General Motors Corporation prepares to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in September this year, the company has unveiled its new GMnext logo – a clear indication of the direction GM is eyeing on this auspicious occasion. Rather than focusing on what it has achieved over the past century, the company believes the road ahead to be more important.

The new GMnext logo reflects its vision and determination to “keep moving forward over the next 100 years.”

The GMnext logo will help brand the introduction of GM’s new generation of vehicles and manufacturing technologies, including newer applications of the E-Flex drive system and continued work on GM’s line of Plug-In and Two-Mode hybrid vehicles. The main corporate communication medium is a dedicated website – http://www.gmnext.com – designed to encourage feedback and interaction between the company, consumers and the media. In addition to GM News, model information and event updates, the website also houses blogs featuring opinion and insights from the general public, industry observers and the global media.

The GMnext logo also aims to communicate the message: “innovation, momentum and environmental-friendliness.” By maintaining the traditional GM lettering in its familiar blue block, the company is building on the strength of its recognizable brand while incorporating new design features to represent an even more dynamic outlook for the future. Utilizing the instantly recognizable “fast forward” symbols and incorporating the “next” message, GM is confident of communicating its drive to a more eco-friendly future. In its drive forward into the next centennial, GMnext focuses on five key elements: Design, Technology, Green, Ideas, and Reach. These core values are reflected in GM’s alternative fuel vehicles that are making life easier for people across the globe.

“GMnext” symbolizes the company’s future: the “Next” signifying GM’s commitment to development, innovation and the use of the latest technologies in the production of all its vehicles.

William Crapo Durant, a shrewd businessman and owner of the Durant-Dort Carriage Company, founded GM on September 16, 1908. Initially created as a holding company for Buick, the company soon went onto acquire the rights for Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Oakland, Pontiac and Chevrolet, named after Louise Chevrolet, the famous Swiss car racer. Chevrolet went on to become the company’s main global brand.

General Motors Thailand is a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, the world’s largest automotive company. Registered in 1993, the company is one of the linchpins of General Motors Corporation’s expansion strategy in the Asia Pacific Region. In 1996, Thailand was chosen as the regional manufacturing site and construction of a local assembly plant in the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate in Rayong Province began in late 1996. The Thai manufacturing plant is modeled on GM’s plant in Eisenach, Germany, ranked among the most efficient automotive facilities in the world. GM’s state-of-the-art technology makes it the most modern car assembly plant in Thailand and one of the most advanced facilities in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide. (http://www.gmthailand.com)

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the world’s largest automaker, has been the annual global industry sales leader for 76 years. GM today employs about 280,000 people around the world. With global headquarters in Detroit, GM manufactures cars and trucks in 33 countries. In 2007, more than 9.3 million GM vehicles were sold globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall. GM’s subsidiary OnStar is the industry leader in vehicle safety, security and information services. (http://www.gm.com)

“GM and Chevrolet are pleased to provide this self-development facility for the students at Wat Ban Kai School and members of the neighboring community. The “Chevrolet Develops Thai Education” project illustrates our commitment to be a good corporate citizen and part of the community in which we conduct our business.
“Wat Ban Kai School and our entire community are extremely grateful for this new library. Even though the school has been established for a long time, we’ve never had a purpose-built library filled with so many modern learning aids. Now we are fortunate to have books and computers to help our people become more knowledgeable,” said Juthamas Prasertsook, Director of Wat Ban Kai School. “Everybody in our community will take care of the Chevrolet library as it is an asset that belongs to us all,” she concluded.

Recognizing the role of education in the development of the nation, General Motors Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand’s “Chevrolet Develops Thai Education” program has already donated 16 fully equipped libraries to schools around the country since being established in 2004. In addition, the company has funded scholarships worth more than 1 million Baht for students nationwide. The company’s “Automotive Service Educational Program in Thailand: ASEP Thailand,” valued at more than 55 million Baht, also provides auto technological labs, vehicles, advanced equipment and training for instructors at 11 leading vocational institutions across Thailand.
GM Powertrain has completed SAE certification of the ZR1’s supercharged LS9 V-8 and the results exceed the estimate: 638 horsepower (476 kW) and 604 lb.-ft. of torque (819 Nm).

The LS9’s output is nearly 103 horses per liter, or just about 1.7 horses for each of the engine’s 376 cubic inches. It is unquestionably the most powerful automotive production engine ever manufactured by General Motors and enables the Corvette ZR1 to achieve a top speed of more than 200 mph (322 km/h).

"One of the most amazing things about the Corvette ZR1 is the level of refinement that our designers and engineers have attained. Even with all that power, this car has road manners that will allow our customers to enjoy it on the streets as a daily driver, and on the track," said Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper.

The Corvette ZR1 goes on sale this summer. Its 638-hp supercharged engine is complemented in the chassis by heavy-duty components not offered in any other model, including a six-speed manual transmission with race-hardened gears and dual-disc clutch technology that delivers exceptional clamping power and lower inertia, as well as strengthened axle components.

Fuel economy testing has not been completed, but engineers are confident the ZR1 will be the most fuel-efficient 600-plus-horsepower car on the market.

The LS9 engine is hand-built by specially trained technicians at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich. It is a unique, small-volume engine production facility that also builds the Chevrolet Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine and other high-performance GM production engines.

“Developing the LS9 involved more than simply striving for a great horsepower number. Endurance and reliability testing have shown the engine to be robust and low-maintenance, just like other engines in the small-block family,” said Sam Winegarden, executive director, engine engineering for GM Powertrain. “That it is distinguished as the most powerful engine ever from General Motors is a source of immense pride among everyone involved with the LS9.”

Supercharged aspiration

The key enabler of the LS9’s performance is the industry’s first production application of a new, positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger that has a unique four-lobe rotor design. Its design promotes quieter and more efficient performance, while the large, 2.3-liter displacement ensures adequate air volume at high rpm. Maximum boost pressure is 10.5 psi (0.72 bar). It is teamed with an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for maximum performance.

“The combination of large displacement and the new, four-lobed rotor design broadens the effective range of the supercharger, allowing the engine to make more power at lower rpm and sustain it throughout the power band,” said Winegarden. “The low-end torque is tremendous and the high-rpm charge from the supercharger is simply amazing.”

A raised hood provides adequate clearance for the LS9, while a polycarbonate window in the hood provides a view of the engine beneath it.

LS9 details

The LS9 features many unique design and manufacturing details that support its high-performance nature. They include:
•	Aluminum cylinder block with iron cylinder liners that are finish-bored and honed with a deck plate installed
•	Forged steel crankshaft with a nine-bolt flange

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the addition of a Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell electric vehicle to its fleet of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today joined the team of pioneers - from regular families to media, celebrities and businesses - helping to make fuel cell vehicles a reality.

For the next six months, DOE employees will use the Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicle to conduct day-to-day business while sharing real-world performance data. The initiative is part of Chevrolet’s “Project Driveway,” an innovative market test that is helping bring fuel cell electric vehicle technology to market.

Project Driveway is an important facet of Chevrolet’s “Gas Friendly to Gas Free” strategy to offer advanced technologies that enable a variety of fuel solutions and remove the automobile from the environment and energy equation. It places more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicles powered by hydrogen in the hands of a variety of drivers in Southern California, Metropolitan New York and Washington, DC and some countries in Asia. The vehicle uses no petroleum and zero greenhouse gases are released. The only emission is clean water vapor.

“We’re pleased to have the DOE join in this important endeavor to speed advanced technologies to consumers,” said Cheryl Catton, general director, Chevrolet Marketing. “The DOE’s participation illustrates the value of industry and government working together to provide solutions to our nation’s energy issues. The findings from all of our Project Driveway participants will help us define our product and market introduction plans for fuel cell electric vehicles.”

Bangkok – “E85 can provide the quickest, least expensive and most practical solutions to rising energy costs and environmental concerns,” said Steve Carlisle, General Motors Southeast Asia Operations and Chevrolet Sales (Thailand).

GM, along with other automakers, is advocating using a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and gasoline (E85) as a cleaner, more reliable, lower greenhouse gas option. Ethanol is also a significantly less expensive source of energy that can help grow Thailand’s economy while providing new jobs, improving the environment and addresses national security concerns.

Currently, Thailand imports 87 percent of its petroleum. Of that, 80 percent is used in the transportation sector.

In 2001, Thailand began its renewable fuels journey by requiring 10 percent of ethanol blended into its gasoline. “GM would like to see an accelerated transition to E85 vehicles. E85 technology is readily available and vehicles could be on Thailand’s roads quite quickly, Carlisle said. In fact, we would like to see them introduced within the next two to four years. GM produces more than 400,000 E85 vehicles a year and there are already 2 million GM E85 vehicles on the road around the world.

“Thailand has a head start on its infrastructure development. Now we need to keep up the momentum to continue this important work,” Carlisle said. “In order to bring E85 to the market, it will take a partnership among industry, government and consumers. Together, we can reduce Thailand’s dependency on fossil fuels and oil imports. In addition, government support for research is imperative and incentives should be considered as a way to promote and encourage adoption of advanced technology and new fuels”.

In Thailand, Chevrolet has implemented a number of near-term solutions such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) versions of the Optra sedan and the Colorado pickup truck. Other solutions such as E20 are planned for introduction at the end of the year and E85 would follow soon after if the right conditions exist.

Bangkok – Chevrolet announces a special promotion for Thai customers: buy any Chevrolet model this June and receive a free 5-year “Platinum Warranty Program,” plus
an i-Call Bluetooth hands-free car kit, worth approximately 5,000 Baht. The campaign runs until the end of the month.

From now till June 30, 2008, Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Limited will reward all new customers with a special promotional campaign: extended terms on its “Platinum Warranty Program” from the current three years or 100,000 km to five years or 100,000 km.

In addition to the extended warranty – with safety in mind – all models of Chevy purchased in June will come fitted with an i-Call Bluetooth hands-free car kit, installed on the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. Customers of selected models can also opt for free gasoline coupons to the value of 20,000 Baht or interest terms of only 1.99 percent on financing.

“With total confidence in all our vehicles we believe an extended five-year warranty is appropriate for regular motorists,” said Mr. John Thomson, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Limited.

Standard auto industry warranty normally stipulates three years or 100,000 km; whichever comes first. This is a disadvantage for many motorists who drive limited distances and often reach the three-year time limit well before they have clocked up 100,000 km. Regular drivers usually travel around 20,000 km annually; therefore, Chevrolet believes the additional two year’s on its warranty is perfect for the average motorist.

“In compliance with the new law prohibiting drivers using mobile phones whilst driving,
we are also offering an i-Call Bluetooth hands-free car kit to all customers during the month of June to ensure a safer driving experience,” added Mr. Thomson.

As well as this special promotion in June 2008, the company will also organize a nationwide road show called the “Chevy Fun Fair,” featuring all Chevrolet models and a host of other fun activities for car lovers. The road show revs up its engines with events in Bangkok starting at The Avenue, Chaeng Wattana from June 4-8, Bon Marché Market, Prachachuen from June 6-15 and an additional two events at Carrefour On-nut and Tesco Lotus Charoen Sanitwong from June 16-30.

NEW YORK – Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. announced it will join Chevrolet’s Project Driveway program and use Chevy’s Equinox Fuel Cell SUVs powered by hydrogen for its complimentary ground transfer service for Upper Class passengers arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The announcement was made at a news conference in New York by Virgin Atlantic President Sir Richard Branson and Dr. Lawrence Burns, GM Vice President of Research and Development and Strategic Planning. The partnership will continue throughout the program’s scheduled 30-month duration.

Project Driveway, the world’s largest fuel cell vehicle test ever, is already underway and plans to place more than 100 zero-emissions electric vehicles powered from hydrogen on the streets of key markets in the U.S. and around the world.

Chevrolet’s Equinox Fuel Cell uses electricity generated by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen using a polymer electrolyte membrane contained in the cell. This reaction between two clean and permanently renewable resources causes no pollution since the only emissions it produces are drops of pure water.

Virgin will use three of these zero-emissions Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicles as ground transportation shuttles, running to and from the airport and serving the Los Angeles area. They will be operated by drivers provided by Music Express Inc. in Burbank, CA. It is possible that a similar type of service may also be established in New York sometime in the future. All this will not only help Virgin reduce its carbon footprint on the ground, an important cornerstone of the company’s environmental strategy, but will also assist in building general awareness of environmentally friendly technologies and their practicability.

“I’d like to thank Sir Richard for giving GM the opportunity to team up with Virgin,” said Larry Burns. “Given his strong environmental record and deep commitment to innovation, GM sees this partnership as an important endorsement of our fuel cell and electric vehicle technology, and an important new avenue for demonstrating the capabilities of this new generation of automobile.”

“Our mission to be a sustainable airline is clear, both on the ground and in the air. Partnerships such as this one with General Motors show that we are pioneers in the aviation industry when it comes to reducing emissions at every stage of our passengers’ journey,” said Sir Richard Branson.

Powered by GM’s fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, the Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicle is a fully functional crossover vehicle. During the Project Driveway program, more than 100 selected consumers in suburban Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, D.C. will be asked to drive these vehicles for three months and report their experiences to Chevrolet. In exchange for this valuable feedback, the vehicles, the hydrogen fuel required and full insurance will be provided free of charge. It is planned that a small number of Project Driveway vehicles will be similarly deployed in other parts of the world, including Germany and Asia.

Aside from its dramatically different propulsion system, the Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicle looks and drives much like a production Chevy Equinox crossover. The fuel cell system fits within the space of the conventional engine compartment and the nickel-metal hydride battery pack, which stores energy from the regenerative braking system to increase operating efficiency and boost acceleration when needed, sits under the floor in the middle of the vehicle. Three compressed-hydrogen storage tanks, made of carbon fiber for strength and pressurized to 10,000 pounds per square inch (psi), are located under the rear seats and cargo area. They contain roughly nine pounds (4.2 kg) of hydrogen giving the Equinox Fuel Cell a range of approximately 150 miles (240 kms) when fully fueled.

Externally, the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicle sports Chevy’s trademark horizontally split grille along with extra cooling air inlets in the lower front corners. At the rear, there are four thin vertical slits under the bumper which replace the normal exhaust pipe and which release the clean water vapor emissions. This patented design lets onlookers know that this is no ordinary internal combustion powered vehicle.

The Equinox Fuel Cell also boasts a long list of standard safety features including driver and passenger frontal air bags and roof rail side-impact air bags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), StabiliTrak stability enhancement technology and OnStar.
This forms part of Chevrolet’s Project Driveway program, the world’s largest fuel cell vehicle test ever, which will place more than 100 zero emissions electric vehicles powered by hydrogen on the streets of key markets in the U.S. and around the world.

Bangkok – GM and Chevrolet are to join forces with Silpakorn University to commemorate the University’s 65th anniversary in initiating the “Ruam Rak Talay Thai Hai Suay Sai Rai Kaya (Save Thailand’s Seas – Keep Beaches Clear of Rubbish)” beach restoration project at Payoon Beach in Rayong. The event will include beach cleaning competitions and exhibitions on the effect that discarded waste can have on the marine environment.

Prompted by concern for the environment, Silpakorn University has launched the “Ruam Rak Talay Thai Hai Suay Sai Rai Kaya (Save Thailand’s Seas – Keep Beaches Clear of Rubbish)” project to mark its 65th anniversary. Through this campaign the University seeks to encourage the Thai youth and general public to pay greater attention to the protection of the country’s beautiful beaches, and to take part in restoring the richness and diversity of the marine life. GM and Chevrolet are supporting the program by providing transportation for participants in a fleet of vehicles led by the environment-friendly CNG-powered Chevrolets.

The event will be held on World Environment Day, June 5th, 2008, at Payoon Beach in Rayong, in cooperation with Ban Chang Municipal District, The Foundation for the Protection of Environment and Tourism, General Motors (Thailand) Limited, Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Limited, and the Diver’s Club of Plutaluang Witthaya School. The day’s schedule includes marine and beachfront waste collection contests, activities and educational displays explaining the ecological effects of ocean garbage pollution, an account of some simple steps that everyone can take to reduce the problem, and tips on the selection and use of “Green” products that hold less consequence for the environment.

“We are seeking cooperation from both the public and private sectors to promote environmental awareness. And we believe particularly in the potential of today’s Thai youth to adopt the motto ‘Protect the Planet, Start with Ourselves’ and to lead the way in this very important movement,” commented Dr. Uthai Dulyakasem, Acting President of Silpakorn University.

“Environmental issues are of global importance. Everybody needs to be aware of this and to lend a hand whenever and wherever possible,” said Steve Carlisle, President of General Motors Southeast Asia Operations Limited and Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Limited.

“GM and Chevrolet have always given a high priority to the support of ecologically related initiatives. We, ourselves, are focussing on the development of environment-friendly vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Optra Estate, the first car to be awarded a ‘Green Label’ certificate in Thailand. And this year we received the same recognition with the new Chevrolet Aveo. As the leader in the automotive industry who has pioneered CNG-driven passenger cars and trucks, we decided to provide a fleet of CNG-powered Chevrolets to support this program. They are more eco-friendly than gasoline-powered vehicles and this fits in well both with the campaign’s objectives and our company’s commitment to a greener future,” Mr. Carlisle concluded.

Silpakorn University chose the Payoon and Namrin Beaches in Ban Chang for the event due to their popularity and their recognized maritime heritage. The university hopes to awaken public interest in environmental preservation through this campaign.

Bangkok – Outside of Thailand, May is the month when many countries around the world honor their mothers. Nations such as Australia, China, Germany, Singapore, the United States and more than 80 other countries celebrate motherhood this month.

Although the historical origins behind the custom of honoring mothers differs from culture to culture, one thing that is clear is the impact mothers -- and all women in general -- have had in today’s workforce. But some industries, such as the automotive sector which has historically been dominated by men, are finding that attracting and retaining qualified women employees is no easy task.

One company that is doing something about it is automotive giant General Motors. As it approaches its first centennial later this year, GM is stepping up to the challenge of its second century as the world’s automotive leader by emphasizing diversity and the influence of women in the global company.

At a time when a woman is vying for the presidency of the most powerful nation on Earth, women still find themselves in less prominent roles than their male counterparts and with fewer opportunities for promotions in their careers, especially in the automotive industry. So GM has taken the initiative by forming the GM Thailand Women’s Council which is open to all female employees of General Motors Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand.

In the year of GM’s Centennial celebration, the GM Thailand Women’s Council announced a set of policies designed to strengthen the role and status of women in the auto industry. Called Drive Success through Diversity, the policies are intended to help women express themselves more openly, working into higher level management positions and support them in their efforts to balance family, social and private obligations.

The specific objectives of the policy are to:
1.	Increase the number of women employees and provide training to lead more balanced lives;
2.	Promote knowledge and broaden opportunities for career development;
3.	Improve automotive knowledge and elevate automotive skill-sets as well as increase exposure of automotive careers to women;
4.	Broaden women’s educational opportunities and provide motivation to continue studies;
5.	Promote the company as being one of the most socially responsible and friendliest companies for women professional

“GM and Chevrolet have everything to gain by supporting more women involvement in management,” said Steve Carlisle, President for GM Southeast Asia Operations, General Motors Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand. “It’s not just an empty promise when I say we want to be the best company in Thailand for women employees.”

“Moreover, this shows every employee in GM and Chevrolet is equal. With our global-standard system and safety working process, women can qualify for the same position as men. It has always been our policy to encourage our employees to balance their private lives, family lives, social lives and careers because we believe that our high quality cars are made by happy employees.” Mr. Carlisle added.

GM and Chevrolet Thailand currently employ 250 women among 3,000 employees. The companies recognize that women’s roles and abilities are important for the growth and success of a business in today’s world. GM Thailand Women’s Council was founded in 2006 with the objective of promoting the potential of women and to increase the influence of woman as employees, customers and dealers throughout Thailand.

Udon Thani - General Motors Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand in an effort to further automotive education in the region, recently set up an ASEP center in Udon Thani. The purpose of ASEP is to develop highly-skilled Thai technicians, with global-standard qualifications, for the Thai automotive industry to enable it to compete on the world markets. The Udon Thani center is sited in the Department of Auto Mechanics at the Kanchanaphisek Udon Thani Technical College. Attending the grand opening were Steve Carlisle, President of General Motors Southeast Asia Operations Ltd. and Chevrolet Sales Thailand Ltd., Vilas Rujiwattaphong, Vice-Governor of Udon Thani Province and Phansak Rojanakart, Advisor for Vocational Education Standards, along with more than 400 instructors, students, guests and members of the media.

Kanchanaphisek Udon Thani Technical College, recognized as the most advanced technical college in Northeast Thailand, participated in the ASEP project and offers its students experience in nine different fields: Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Welding, Building Construction, Accounting, Sales and Marketing, Business Computers and Technical Computers. It is anticipated that around 400 technical students from all over the region will enrol in this ASEP center every year.

“Appointing Kanchanaphisek Udon Thani Technical College to be the ASEP center in this region is part of our plan to extend this program nationwide. Our aim is to assist students all over Thailand to qualify as highly-skilled technicians thus enhancing Thai engineering capabilities and forming a driving force behind the ongoing, sustainable industrial development that I firmly believe to be the cornerstone of the country’s future,” observed Mr. Carlisle.

Phansak Rojanakart, Advisor for Vocational Education Standards also voiced his support of the ASEP project by saying, “This program is an excellent example of the type of bilateral collaboration between businesses and educational institutes that surely holds much potential for Thailand in the future. The skills which students attending these ASEP courses will acquire will enable them to make significant contributions to the advancement of technical professionalism throughout Thai industry.”

ASEP Thailand is part of the theme ‘Chevrolet Develops Thai Education’ founded in 2004 by GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand, in support of which they have invested some THB 55 million in providing automotive laboratories equipped with engines, instruments and Chevrolet vehicles together with the technological know-how that will provide first-class, hands-on and real-life experiences for students enrolled in the program. More than 50 percent of graduates are expected to be employed in the automotive industry whilst the remainder will take their skills to other industries throughout the country where well qualified technicians are always in demand.

In recognition of the contribution that the ‘Chevrolet Develops Thai Education’ project has already made to Thai industry in particular and Thai society as a whole, the Ministry of Education, when marking its 116 year anniversary, recently presented GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand with the pretigious ‘Semakunuprakarn’ pin.
