Detroit (Aug. 13) — General Motors recently announced that Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. will step down as CEO on September 1, and as Chairman of the Board by the end of the year, having successfully led the company’s return to profitability after the most turbulent period in its history.

Earlier today, GM reported its second consecutive quarter of profits after a string of losses dating back to 2007.

Dan Akerson, 61, who has served on the GM Board of Directors since July 2009, will become CEO on September 1 and Chairman by the end of the year, ensuring a smooth transition and continued positive momentum for company.

“My goal in coming to General Motors was to help restore profitability, build a strong market position and position this iconic company for success,”said Whitacre. “We are clearly on that path. A strong foundation is in place and I am comfortable with the timing of my decision.”

Whitacre, 68, joined GM as Chairman of the Board on July 10, 2009. On December 1, 2009, he was named Chief Executive Officer. He led the company after it emerged from a historic bankruptcy to become a profitable automaker again.

“Ed Whitacre was exactly what this company needed, at exactly the right time,” said Pat Russo, lead director on the GM Board. “He simplified the organization, reshaped the company’s vision, put the right people in place and brought renewed energy and optimism to GM.”

“Dan Akerson has been actively engaged in and supportive of the key decisions and changes made at the new GM. He brings broad business experience, decisive leadership and continuity to this role,” said Russo. “The Board of Directors deeply appreciates the leadership Ed has provided and is pleased with the serious commitment Dan is making to the company. We look forward to his leadership.”

In addition to serving on the GM board since July 2009, Akerson has a distinguished career in finance as Managing Director at the Carlyle Group and in telecommunication, serving as chairman and chief executive officer of XO Communications and at Nextel Communications. He was also chairman and CEO of General Instrument Corp.

“There are remarkable opportunities ahead for the new GM, and I am honored to lead the company through this next chapter,” said Akerson. “Ed Whitacre established a foundation upon which we will continue building a great automobile company.”
DETROIT, Mich. – General Motors today said that thanks to strong public interest in the Chevrolet Volt, the 340-mile extended range electric vehicle, it will increase U.S. production capacity of the groundbreaking new car by 50 percent, from 30,000 units to 45,000 units, in 2012.

The announcement came as U.S. President Barack Obama toured the Detroit-Hamtramck facility, where the Volt is being produced now for sale later this year.

“The Chevrolet Volt provides drivers with the latest technology, outstanding innovation, and something no other electric vehicle can provide – peace of mind,” said Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., GM Chairman and CEO. “We are very proud to host the President of the United States at this plant, where the future of the American automobile industry is being built today by the men and women of General Motors.”

The expanded U.S. production capacity is the latest in a series of positive developments for the Chevrolet Volt. This week, participating Chevrolet dealers in launch markets began taking customer orders for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, following the release of retail and lease pricing. The brand also recently announced unprecedented battery and vehicle limited warranties to bring value and peace of mind to Volt customers. And the number of U.S. launch markets for the vehicle recently was raised from three to seven. In the past few weeks, more than 25,000 people have joined the Chevrolet Volt enthusiast list.

The Volt offers a total driving range of about 340 miles and is powered by electricity at all times. For up to the first 40 miles, the vehicle drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered, engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank.

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant received $336 million in new investment to prepare for production of the Volt, part of more than $700 million GM has invested in eight Michigan facilities to support Volt production since 2008. This includes a 33,000 square-foot battery systems lab in Warren; a battery assembly facility in Brownstown Township; and supporting engine and stamping operations in Grand Blanc, Bay City, and three plants in Flint.

Besides direct GM jobs, the Volt has helped spur additional supplier employment and investment. Earlier this month, battery cell supplier LG Chem/Compact Power Inc. broke ground on a $300 million, 650,000 square-foot plant in Holland, Mich., to support Volt production, creating 400 jobs. In addition, the Volt helped start an electrification trend. Since its debut in January 2007, other automakers have announced 30 plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles.
Chevrolet Captiva SUVs are the official transportations for the 30 MTW contestants on their social activity engagements in the southern island city of Phuket.
As one of the main sponsors for this year’s contest, GM views Miss Thailand World stage as an important venue where modern Thai women can demonstrate their capabilities and express their opinions on today’s society as well as participate in social activities, especially in the area of education, which is in line with GM’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy.
“We are proud to be part of the Miss Thailand World event by supporting the contestants’ activities and realizing the dream of one of these Thai ladies. GM sees MTW not only as a vital beauty competition stage, but also as a place to ignite friendships and care for society,” said Mrs Sasinan Allmand, PR Director for GM Thailand and Southeast Asia.
The company’s participation in Miss Thailand World contest consolidates the foundation for GM’s mission to inspire and empower women.
The MTW activities in Phuket are also greatly supported by VST Auto Sales (2002), Chevrolet’s authorized dealer in Phuket, Pang-Nga and Krabi provinces, by facilitating transportation for the contestants to march around Phuket Island as well as joining in social activities such as painting schools, story-telling to children, repairing school buildings’ roofs and sightseeing the world’s renowned tourist attractions on the island.

Shanghai – As part of the completion of its corporate campus, which opened in 2009, General Motors broke ground this morning for the GM China Advanced Technical Center.

The new facility, which will be adjacent to the GM China International Operations and GM China Headquarters in Shanghai, will develop advanced vehicle designs and technology solutions for GM on a domestic and global basis. It will be part of GM’s global engineering and design network, and support GM’s vision to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles.

“As an integral element of our global product development strategy, the GM China Advanced Technical Center will create advanced technologies and lead GM's global research in targeted areas,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “We expect it to become one of GM’s most important and comprehensive technical and design facilities worldwide.”

The GM China Advanced Technical Center will include 62 test labs and nine research labs. It will be home to four key research and design organizations:

•	The China Science Lab, which was launched in 2009, is engaged in research and technology development that should lead to applications over five to 15 years. Its focus is on advanced propulsion system research, manufacturing process research, megacity smart traffic research, customer-driven advanced vehicle development, battery cell material and fabrication research, and lightweight material research.
•	The Vehicle Engineering Lab will localize technology for the Chinese market. It will carry out the testing and development of electric vehicles, research on alternative energy vehicles, research and development of battery technology in conjunction with Chinese suppliers, and product development featuring advanced technology and design solutions with GM’s domestic joint ventures.
•	The Advanced Powertrain Engineering Lab will carry out research and development work on advanced propulsion systems, including electrification technology, alternatives to petroleum-based fuels in conventional powertrains, and unique conventional powertrains for the local market, as well as development and testing of new materials for powertrain products.
•	The Advanced Design Center will play a significant role supporting GM’s global design resources, with a focus on meeting local needs. Its world-class capability will include a digital visualization center and secure indoor and outdoor viewing/exhibition areas. It will gather and analyze information on automotive, fashion and other design trends in the Chinese and regional markets to support vehicle development.

Construction of the GM China Advanced Technical Center will be completed by the end of 2011. Within five years, it is expected to have more than 300 employees, including designers, researchers, engineers and technicians. The new facility will complement GM’s engineering and product development partnerships in China, including the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai and the China Automotive Energy Research Center (CAERC) in Beijing.

According to Wale, “As a global technology leader and the global industry leader in China, GM is committed to working with the Chinese government, industry partners and the academic community in the development of tomorrow’s vehicles. By joining forces, we can accelerate the arrival of sustainable transportation and remove the motor vehicle from the environmental equation.”

-	Crossover with Extended Range Capability Builds on Volt’s Foundation

Beijing – Chevrolet has made a major commitment to providing world-class, fuel-efficient vehicles to its customers around the world. In recent months, through GM’s Shanghai GM joint venture, Chevrolet has introduced the fuel-efficient Cruze and New Sail in China. It will introduce the Volt electric vehicle with extended range capability in 2011.

In preparation for the Volt’s arrival, Chevrolet is leveraging Auto China 2010, which starts today in Beijing, to introduce the Volt MPV5 electric concept. The five-passenger multi-purpose crossover concept demonstrates the potential of the Voltec propulsion system by utilizing the same foundation as the Volt, for gas- and tailpipe emissions-free electric driving.

Maximizing Efficiency and Style

The styling of the Volt MPV5 concept borrows design and aerodynamic cues from the Chevrolet Volt. The front fascia is among the most aerodynamic of any crossover thanks to its closed grille and aero-optimized lower air dam, both of which help improve fuel efficiency. A full-underbody belly pan, along with rocker claddings, creased tail lamps and specially designed blades on the rear quarter, also help the Volt MPV5 concept cut through the wind with ease. The intense focus on improved aerodynamics enables greater all-electric range.

The exterior of the Volt MPV5 concept isn’t solely about efficiency. Its Sonic Blue Metallic paint provides a contemporary appeal, while the dual skylight panels and 19-inch Volt-inspired wheels build the Volt MPV5 concept’s sporty credentials.

“The Volt MPV5 concept takes the efficient design of the Chevrolet Volt and adapts it to the family vehicle crossover segment. It’s immediately recognizable as a true member of the Chevrolet family,” said Bob Boniface, Director of GM North America Crossover Exterior Design, whose team worked in conjunction with members of GM’s design studio in Australia on the Volt MPV5 concept.

The Volt MPV5 concept’s dimensions provide added passenger comfort. While the 2,760-mm wheelbase of the Volt MPV5 concept is a mere 15 mm longer than the wheelbase of the Chevrolet Volt, its body is 181 mm longer (4,585 mm), 73 mm wider (1,871 mm) and 182 mm taller (1,612 mm) than the Volt.

Inside, the Volt MPV5 concept adopts the Volt’s center stack and gauge cluster along with its striking two-tone leather seats. Thanks to the Volt MPV5 concept’s size, passenger comfort doesn’t take a backseat. Typical for Chevrolet crossovers, the Volt MPV5 concept’s seating position allows for maximum comfort and flexibility, including improved entry and egress.

When it comes to cargo, the Volt MPV5 concept carries on the crossover tradition thanks to its flip-and-fold second row seating, which provides up to 1,764.1 liters of cargo space with the seats folded and 863.7 liters of space behind the second row.

Voltec Power Boosts Green Credentials

The Volt MPV5 concept utilizes the same Voltec propulsion system found in the Chevrolet Volt, including the added capability of an engine generator to extend the driving range and eliminate “range anxiety.” A 16-kWh T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack powers the electric drive unit.

The flexibility of the Voltec system enables the Volt MPV5 concept to meet full vehicle speed and acceleration requirements while driving the vehicle and its five occupants up to 51.5 km on pure electric propulsion. This is double what the average urban commuter in China travels each day. When the battery is depleted, a 1.4-liter engine generator sustains the battery charge and provides up to 482 km of electric propulsion.

“The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles. from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept,” said Doug Parks, Global Vehicle Line Executive and Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles a“Rapidly growing demand for personal transportation across China is creating new environmental and energy security challenges,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “GM is committed to finding and adopting solutions, which include the electrification of the automobile. The world premiere of the Volt MPV5 concept in Beijing demonstrates GM’s desire to make China a global focus of its advanced technology strategy.”

GM continues to advance electrification in China through research and development. It has launched the China Automotive Energy Research Center (CAERC) in Beijing. The venture with SAIC and Tsinghua University is developing a comprehensive automotive energy strategy for China. The GM China Science Lab, which opened last November, is carrying out advanced automotive-related research, including battery development. In March, GM introduced the EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concepts in Shanghai. A centerpiece of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, EN-V embodies GM’s vision for personal urban mobility in 2030. In addition, GM is supporting its Shanghai GM joint venture’s “Drive to Green” strategy, which is focused on developing green products, supporting green manufacturing and undertaking a green responsibility.

DETROIT, Mich. – General Motors Company announced that it had completed fresh-start accounting, and would be filing its third quarter 2009 Form 10-Q and 2009 Form 10-K with the SEC today.

“We are building the foundation that will allow us to return to public ownership,” said Chris Liddell, GM vice chairman and CFO. “Completing fresh-start accounting is an important step in that process.”

The new company, which was formed on July 10, 2009 through the acquisition of substantially all the assets and certain liabilities of Motors Liquidation Company (formerly General Motors Corporation), had to complete the process of adopting fresh-start accounting to record the acquisition and establishment of the new GM as well as determine the fair value of assets and liabilities and implement new accounting policies.

The following table provides a summary of GM’s financial results for the period ended December 31, 2009 under fresh-start accounting.

July 10-Dec. 31, ‘09
($ bils)
Global revenue $57.5

Net income/(loss) attributed to stockholders $(4.3)

Net cash provided by operating activities $1.0

The $4.3 billion net loss includes the pre-tax impact of a $2.6 billion settlement loss related to the UAW retiree medical plan and a $1.3 billion foreign currency re-measurement loss.

Going public will enable the company to invest in designing, building and selling the world’s best vehicles, attract the best people and access the capital markets. One of the most important measures in establishing the foundation for going public is the company’s ability to return to sustainable profitability.

“As the results for 2009 show there is still significant work to be done. However, I continue to believe we have a chance of achieving profitability in 2010,” said Liddell. “We are also dedicated to delivering on our commitments to our stakeholders. For example we remain committed to repaying the outstanding balance of the U.S. Treasury and Export Development Canada loans by June 2010 at the latest.”

GM Thailand and GM ASEAN are a part of the new GM and its operations have since been consolidated into the new balance sheet.

Shanghai – General Motors and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. opened their joint pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai to the public for the first officially on May 1, 2010 during an event attended by media and Expo 2010 officials.

Reflecting the Expo 2010 theme of “Better City, Better Life,” GM and SAIC are providing a holistic experience, highlighting the future of sustainable mobility. As the joint global automobile partner of World Expo 2010 Shanghai, GM and SAIC are presenting a revolutionary mobility and transportation concept that looks ahead to the year 2030.

“It is a vision of future driving that is free from petroleum, free from emissions, free from crashes, free from congestion, and at the same time fun and fashionable,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “We are proud to be showcasing solutions that will make this vision a reality at our corporate pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.”

The SAIC-GM Pavilion and the fluid lines of its exterior were inspired by nature and an automobile body. Symbolizing the road to the future, the spiral design conveys promise and progressiveness, outlining a road that links the present with the future. Visitors will immediately be attracted to the pavilion’s outer curtain wall, which is constructed of 4,000 curved aluminum panels.

The facade is accentuated by a 300-square-meter LED screen. Dubbed the “Angel’s
hint of what they can expect once they go inside.

Inside, the pavilion has been divided into Pre-Show, Main Show and Post-Show areas, which highlight the theme of “Drive to 2030.”

Getting on the Road to 2030
The Pre-Show area sets the stage. Visitors will relive Shanghai’s fast development over the past two decades. Five themed areas – Out of Gas, Traffic Jam, Parking Difficulty, Traffic Accident and Difficulty Driving – will show some of the challenges related to economic development and the growing number of motor vehicles. Further into the pavilion, visitors will find that solutions to all of these challenges have been found through sustainable mobility, enabled by electrification, connectivity and autonomous driving.

Welcoming 2030
In the Main Show area, visitors will be shown into one of four theaters, each with a curved screen that is 6.5 meters tall and 38 meters wide. All four screens have a visual angle of 144 degrees. Seated in zero-delay motion seats, visitors will be immersed in a movie created especially for the pavilion by a world-renowned team of professionals.

The movie is entitled “2030, Xing!” It shows how electrification, networking and autonomous driving will enable humans to coexist harmoniously with the natural environment. Through the 10-minute film, SAIC and GM will convey how tomorrow’s transportation will bring people and personal transportation closer together.

At the conclusion of the movie, the four screens will fall, combining the four theaters into one large arena. A stage show will offer a theatrical performance, with concept vehicles interacting with live performers. The vehicles displayed in the movie will then appear on a rising stage with melodious music playing in the background. This will demonstrate that the vision portrayed in the movie is already on the road to being realized.

Among the concept vehicles being displayed are the EN-V, YeZ and Shell. GM’s EN-V (which is short for Electric Networked-Vehicle) integrates electrification and connectivity, redefining the DNA of the automobile. The two-wheel electric vehicle also has autonomous driving capability, offering a practical solution for increasingly crowded urban areas.

The YeZ highlights SAIC’s idea of a vehicle that can absorb CO2 and water molecules in the air and, like an actual leaf, convert them into power for the vehicle through a series of chemical reactions. It would work during both sunny and overcast days while also being able to leverage wind power. This would enable mobility with zero greenhouse gas emissions.

The Shell was also developed by SAIC. It is not only an automobile, but also a bedroom, office and gym.

The partners will show that the urban area of the future will be much unlike our cities of today. Traffic networks will crisscross each other in a neat fashion, maximizing limited urban space. Integrated, levitated and elevated roads will appear, merging trains and cars.

It will be an era of intelligent transportation powered by electricity, with vehicles, buildings and public facilities seamlessly connected. It will also be an era in which traffic congestion and traffic accidents are consigned to the history books.

2030 is Coming
In the Post-Show area, visitors will again see that the 2030 vision portrayed in the movie is achievable. They will have the chance to get close to the vehicles shown in the movie in addition to other advanced technologies that GM and SAIC are working on. The setting will be framed by the city of the future.

The Post-Show area has eight sections: Welcome Corridor, Traffic Hub, Satellite City, Central Business District, Apartment Life, Window to the Future, Future Outlook, and Souvenir Sales. They will show the vital link of the automobile in people’s lives while further educating visitors about SAIC and GM’s vision of urban transportation in 2030.

In the Future Outlook section, visitors will interact with the year 2030. They will be able to have their pictures taken in 2030. They will be able to access their photos on the official pavilion website using a password. Before leaving the Post-Show area, SAIC-GM Pavilion visitors will be able to purchase souvenirs to remind themselves of their journey into the future.
