GM Praised “Outstanding Safety, Occupational Health and Working Environment” for Ninth Consecutive Year

Date: 2-07-09

The Prime Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Vejajiva presents the ‘Outstanding Award for Safety, Occupational Health and Working Environment’ to Mr. Kenneth Cavanaugh, Vice President of Manufacturing and Quality, General Motors (Thailand) Limited (GMTH). This is the ninth consecutive year GMTH is receiving this award.

Bangkok – General Motors and Chevrolet were again presented with the “Outstanding Award for Safety, Occupational Health and Working Environment” at the 23rd National Work Safety Week ceremony. This marks the ninth consecutive year that the company has been recognized for its safety performance and work environment initiatives.

Safety policies and practices have been a top priority at General Motors since the company first started operations in Thailand. Standards are set high, in line with the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s work safety strategy. The policy covers three critical steps: Spot the Hazard, Assess the Risk and Make the Changes.

GM’s working environment and concern for the welfare of its employees is reflected in the company’s generous staff benefits. A medical center at the company’s Rayong facility is staffed by health professionals and provides annual medical checkups and offers physical and mental health counseling. Other benefits include spaces for recreational activities, a canteen that provides free lunches, a fitness center with physiotherapist, a library and a shaded garden where employees can take breaks.

A Welfare Committee Board and other internal communications staff are available as channels for employees to raise concerns or feedback on employment related issues. The company firmly believes that quality cars are the result of quality employees integrating with an excellent production system.

Another result of its strong safety policy, General Motors Rayong Plant in Thailand was presented with the Regional Manufacturing Leader’s Award for achieving high recognition safety record worked without a single lost work day which is 8,760 hours of operations in a year and is totally 78,840 hours of operations for ninth consecutive years with zero accident during the working hours.
