Environmentally-Friendly Captiva Earns Chevrolet Third Consecutive ‘Green Label’ Award

Date: 7-11-08
- Industry recognition spurs on automaker’s development of alternative fuel vehicles

Bangkok – The Chevrolet Captiva was recently conferred prestigious “Green Label” status by the Thailand Environmental Institute (TEI) and the Thailand Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) for its minimum impact on the environment, making Chevrolet the only automobile brand in Thailand to have won the award three times in a row.

The Captiva’s success completes a hat trick of Green Label Awards for Chevrolet, with the Chevrolet AVEO winning the award for best compact sedan in 2007 and the Chevrolet Optra Estate taking top honors at the inaugural Green Label Awards in 2006.

“Chevrolet are honored to receive Green Label certification, and extremely proud to be the only local automaker to have received this honor three times in a row,” said Steve Carlisle, President for Chevrolet Sales Thailand. “This is confirmation that all our hard work and investment in developing environmentally-friendly, fuel-efficient vehicles is paying off.”

Green Label Awards are given to quality products, manufactured with the highest level of environmental awareness and the least impact on the environment when used. Green Label products do not release chemicals or toxic waste and conserve energy and minimize waste during the manufacturing process. In addition, consideration is also given to products that are safe to dispose of at the end of their lifespan. Green Label products are a safe and responsible alternative for environmentally conscious consumers.

Vehicles applying for Green Label certification must not only meet the minimum requirements of correct ISO certification and proper production and waste disposal procedures, they must also meet the TEI’s rigid criteria, comply with Thailand’s Motor Vehicle Act and meet ISO 9001:2000 certification in the manufacturing process. All manufacturing, logistic and waste management processes must comply with Thai regulations and no heavy metals – such as mercury, lead or cadmium – can be used in the production process. Instruction documents on eliminating waste must be provided, noise pollution must not exceed maximum standard, and the power/waste rate must not be lower than minimum standard. The product must also pass Euro 3 emission standards and cooling substance in air-conditioning system must have zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential).

In recent years, Chevrolet has focused their R&D efforts on new technologies and alternative fuels. CNG is an important interim step, particularly here in Thailand. Last year, Chevrolet became Thailand’s first and only brand that offer a CNG-powered passenger car – the 1.6 liter Chevrolet CNG Optra – capable of changing between CNG and gasoline with the flick of a switch. Following the success of the Optra, Chevrolet then launched the Colorado CNG for pickup fans looking for style, performance and cost-efficiency.

“Our concept vehicles such as the latest all-electric Chevrolet Volt, the hydrogen-powered Chevrolet Equinox and the newest generation of ethanol- and bio-diesel-powered vehicles show how committed Chevrolet is to the development and introduction of cutting-edge vehicles at the global-level,” said Mr. Carlisle. “We look forward to working closely with the appropriate Thai Government ministries on several initiatives, including increasing the availability of natural gas and ethanol to power vehicles here in Thailand.”

Launched in April 2007, the gasoline- or diesel-powered Chevrolet Captiva is a modern multipurpose ‘Progressive SUV’. With its spacious, comfortable passenger zone and adjustable cargo area, the Captiva has joined the ranks of the top SUVs, not only in Thailand but also across the world.
